Sustainability & Employer Branding – Employer Branding Talks September 20th

22 SEPTEMBER 2022

Sustainability. A significant, complex, and crucial topic that becomes more relevant with each passing day. After a summer marked by heat records, drought, and fires, more and more people are asking how they can contribute to a better climate. Alongside this growing engagement, the demands on employers to transition to a sustainable workplace are also increasing. So, how should you proceed to meet candidates’ expectations in the best way possible? And how does the sustainability issue truly affect and get affected by employer branding?

In our seventh Employer Branding Talk, we dedicate 45 minutes to the topic of sustainability and listen to Sustainability Strategist Axel Boethius’ advice on how we can approach this issue – both as employees and business leaders. Watch the recording of the event here.

Are you interested in transforming your workplace into a more sustainable environment and driving positive changes within your organization? Well, here at Oddwork, we’d like to introduce you to a challenge that we’ve taken on ourselves – the Breakit Climate Challenge. It’s a digital bootcamp designed to make the new business landscape more environmentally conscious. You can find all the details right here.

The Impact of Sustainability on Employer Branding

According to the 2019 Deloitte Global Millennial Survey, young people’s perspective on the future is marked by pessimism and concern regarding their careers, personal lives, and the world at large. Climate change and natural disasters are common fears, and trust in both companies and politicians has diminished. The report encompasses responses from 13,400 millennials in 42 countries and 3,000 individuals from Generation Z in 10 countries.

In other words, organizations need to understand how to address these demands for social responsibility, diversity, and environmental consciousness to gain the trust of future talents. Just like in employer branding, authenticity is a strong trend in both internal and external communication when it comes to sustainability.

“Thriving companies don’t try to appear flawless; they openly acknowledge their challenges and inspire employees to undertake the journey together.”
— Axel Boethius, SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIST

Three Tips for Transitioning to a Sustainable Workplace

No matter how we feel about the climate issue, it’s going to impact us. By 2025, three out of four job seekers will be actively looking for and expecting employers to take sustainability seriously. Moreover, the long-term costs of inaction will become significantly greater. So, where, and how do you begin the journey toward a more sustainable workplace? Axel Boethius shares three practical tips!

Act and Get Started

Take it step by step, beginning with achievable goals that bring positivity and inspire further action.

Communicate!

If you’re uncertain about how you can make a positive impact from your position, share your thoughts with your employees. Focus on your developmental goals and what steps can be taken today. For a company, it’s crucial to communicate the strategy behind your efforts to build trust and foster a robust organizational culture.

Think Holistically

As an individual, you can start by cutting down on items you don’t truly need, evaluating your habits related to food, transportation, and streaming services. It’s also a good idea to gain a comprehensive understanding of your financials and retirement plans. A mere 100 companies are responsible for over 70% of emissions, so explore how you can contribute to reducing your carbon footprint in that domain.
