How to build your personal brand

23 JULY 2025

Market yourself to strengthen your competitiveness

Marketing yourself can feel like a big task, but working on your personal brand doesn’t have to be difficult. It can also bring several advantages in the recruitment process.

Here are our tips on how to go about it!

What is a personal brand?

Imagine you are in a job interview. You are sitting there, ready to answer questions, when the interviewer suddenly asks: “So, who are you really?” That question, which can feel both surprising and hard to answer, is the core of your personal brand.

Your personal brand is about how you present yourself, which values and qualities you convey, and how you create a unique and memorable experience for others. It is your professional identity and an opportunity to influence how potential employers see you.

In this article we guide you step by step through how to create, strengthen and communicate your personal brand as a job seeker.

6 tips to strengthen your personal brand

1. Define your core: who are you in your career?

The first step in building your personal brand is to define who you are and what you stand for professionally. What are your strengths? What are your unique skills and qualities?

Tip: Do a self-assessment and ask colleagues or friends how they would describe you. Look for recurring themes; they are the key to your brand.

2. Set your goal: what do you want to achieve?

Your personal brand should reflect where you are heading in your career. Do you want to be known as an IT expert, a skilled project manager or a creative designer?

Tip: Clear goals help you decide how to position yourself, how you communicate, which platforms you prioritise and which networks you engage in.

3. Build your digital presence

At a time when most recruiters google candidates, your online presence is an important part of your personal brand.

Tip: Make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete and up to date. Spend extra time on a clear headline and an engaging summary. Keep professional channels such as LinkedIn and X in line with your personal brand, and review the settings on personal accounts such as Instagram. If you work in a creative or technical field, your own website can be a great way to show your projects and achievements.

4. Create value: share your knowledge

Being visible as an active, knowledgeable person in your field strengthens your brand. As an expert you become more visible to potential employers, partners and clients, which can open up exciting collaborations and new career opportunities.

Tip: Share articles, write your own LinkedIn posts or join discussions in relevant forums. Don’t be afraid to show your personality; it makes you more memorable.

5. Network strategically

Build relationships with people in your industry and show your commitment by attending events, courses or professional networks.

Tip: Ask questions, get involved and be curious. A strong network can lead to invaluable recommendations and opportunities.

6. Ask for feedback and keep developing

Just like consumer brands, personal brands are not static but evolve over time.

Tip: Ask colleagues or mentors for feedback to understand how you are perceived and what you can improve so people remember you and want to work with you.
